Throughout most of the 20th century, neon lights were the sign of progress and modernity – and behind the Iron Curtain, the illusion of it. Fixed upon the crumbling facades of the once magnificent buildings of post-war Budapest, neon lights beamed banal advertisements and Communist propaganda just like in any other country of the Eastern Bloc.

House Speaker László Kövér inaugurated a mounted statue of Count Gyula Andrássy, Hungary’s prime minister between 1867 and 1871, in front of Parliament in Kossuth Square. The reconstructed Andrássy statue will return to its original place in its former glory, he said, noting that its inauguration completes the process of restoring the pre-1944 look of the Square.

Japan’s Tomoki Sakata won the 14th Ferenc Liszt International Piano Competition at the Budapest Academy of Music. Russian pianist Sergei Beliavsky won the second prize and the audience’s award, while the third prize went to Germany’s Leon Bernsdorf. Krisztián Kocsis, the only Hungarian competitor, was given the human resources ministry’s special prize.
