Snack maker Mondelez International inaugurated a 4.5 billion forint expansion at its biscuit plant in Székesfehérvár, in central Hungary, on Friday. Economy Minister Mihály Varga, attending the inauguration ceremony, said the government would spend some 300 billion forints (EUR 955m) on food industry developments in the next few years.

The Lajta monitor, the sole remaining, fully restored river warship of the Austro-Hungarian Navy, is now a floating museum on the Danube in front of Parliament. The river monitor was launched in 1871, and besides serving throughout the First World War, it played a part in the toppling of the short-lived Communist regime of Béla Kun in 1919.

A new section of the Iron Curtain cycling trail was inaugurated by Hungarian and Austrian politicians on Tuesday, the day marking the 25th anniversary of the Pan- European Picnic in western Hungary. Organised by the opposition, the picnic took place at Sopronpuszta close to the Austrian border on this day 25 years ago. The event paved the way for the fall of the Iron Curtain.

A 6.6 million euro expansion of the Győr- Pér Airport, which serves the needs of German carmaker Audi’s base in Győr, in north-west Hungary, was inaugurated today. The airport can now accommodate Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 aircraft. State secretary Péter Szijjártó said talks with Hungarian low-fare airline Wizz Air were under way on raising the number of destinations on the airport’s timetable.
