The volume of construction output in Hungary plummeted 33.9% in March as compared to the same month a year earlier, with the output of both main groups of constructions decreasing, the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH) reported today. The volume of new contracts, however, was 47.3% higher than the low base in the previous year.

The number of HIV infections has been steadily growing in Hungary in the past decade and every fifth school-age child has tried drugs, the Central Statistical Office said in the survey Magyarország 2015. Efforts to raise AIDS awareness in Hungary are wanting and there are hardly any prevention or screening programmes that could improve the chances of early diagnoses and successful treatment.

The number of home building permits issued in Hungary in the first quarter rose by an annual 100.1% to 4,765, data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said. The number of home building permits issued in Budapest rose by 78% to 1,280. In county seats and cities with over 50,000 residents, the number climbed 145% to 1,296.

Every year the number of people infected by the HIV virus has been rising in Hungary, the daily Magyar Nemzet said, quoting an infectologist. Around 300 new cases are registered each year, János Szlávik, chief consultant at St István and St László hospitals, said, adding that currently 1,700 people have to be screened regularly for HIV.

Fully 127,000 people died in Hungary in 2013 compared with 107,000 in Portugal and 109,000 in the Czech Republic, two countries with smaller populations than Hungary, KSH said in its Hungary 2015 report.
