Two senior police officials and two civilians were arrested on suspicion of corruption Thursday evening, prosecutor spokesman Imre Keresztes announced on Friday. The National Defence Service, the Anti-Terrorist Service, the Emergency Police, as well as special units took part in the operation, conducting several house searches.

The Budapest Hard Rock Café is among the company’s five best performing units in Europe since it opened five months ago, European operations chief Antonio Bautista declared. An average of 15,000-16,000 guests have visited the café on Vörösmarty tér, and close to 20,000 in April. In general, half of the guests are foreign and half are Hungarian.

Hungarian mathematician Endre Szemerédi received the Abel Prize, the highest distinction that a mathematician may receive, from Norwegian King Harald V in Oslo on Tuesday. Harald called Szemerédi a “prince” of present-day mathematics. The prize comes with a cash award of six million Norwegian kroner (Ft 238 million).

Lawyer Peter Daniel poured red paint on a wooden statue of inter-war regent Miklos Horthy in Kereki, Somogy county last Tuesday night. Daniel then hung a board with the caption “mass murderer, war criminal” in Hungarian around the statue’s neck. The statue, unveiled on Sunday has now been removed from its plinth and taken away.
Bosch Group Posts Solid Growth In Hungary

Revenues of industrial group Bosch in Hungary rose 27% in 2011 to Ft 527 billion, head of Hungarian operations Javier Gonzalez Pareja announced last week. Sales rose 13% to Ft 134 billion on the domestic market mainly in the auto parts segment. Bosch added 1,700 new jobs in Hungary last year to about 8,000.
Construction Sector In Deep Recession In Hungary

The downturn in the construction industry continued as output in March contracted 12.6% year-on-year, the Central Statistics Office KSH announced. Compared to February output was up by 0.1%. In the first three months, the sector's performance shrank by an annualised 11.6%, according to the KSH data.

A 1,000m3 container filled with bitumen burst into flame at the MOL refinery in Zalaegerszeg at 3.30 a.m. Friday when its upper section cracked, the energy company announced. Despite the malfunction, the refinery is operating at full capacity, MOL added.
