Traffic changes will be made in public transport service and on roads and Danube bridges on the eve and the day of St. Stephen’s Day (Tuesday, 19 August and Wednesday, 20 August 2014). Already on 19 August 2014, traffic restrictions will be in place at several locations in the city due to preparations for the celebrations, therefore some public transport lines will run on modified routes.

On 20 August 2014, between 9 – 9.30 pm, fireworks will be launched from four sites (three barges and the Chain Bridge) to create the traditional ceremonial 'play of lights' in the Hungarian capital. The 'whale' that prominently rests on the side of Pest's riverbank, between the Petőfi and Szabadság bridges - the structure that used to be referred to as the CET building - seems to be reaching calm waters now. After years of dispute over the fate of this giant structure, the obstacles to it fully operating have finally gone, and it's ready to open up at the end of this month.

Perhaps I haven’t spent enough time on the plight of the homeless in Hungary. The United Nations estimates the number of homeless people in Hungary at 30-35,000, of whom about 8,000 are in Budapest. Some of them live in homeless shelters; others, afraid of being robbed, refuse to go there. In any case, there are only about 5,500 places, which is not enough. Some of those counted as homeless ...
