The Media Council has imposed a Ft 250,000 fine on Magyar Hírlap because of an anti-Roma editorial in which staff writer Zsolt Bayer referred to Roma as “animals”. The council said the January 5 article violates the ban on hate speech.

Hungary is set to become the first EU country to be monitored by the Council of Europe, following recent changes to the country’s constitution. The monitoring committee of the Council of Europe’s Parliamentary Assembly announced last week (25 April) that it was recommending a formal procedure to monitor Hungary’s respecting of its obligations to the Council of Europe.

Only 5.8% of reports on Hungary published in the most important foreign newspapers last year on Hungary were positive in tone, under-secretary for international communications Ferenc Kumin said yesterday, citing a study by the Nézõpont Institute. A large number of factual errors appear in the international media, and his office makes an effort to correct them, Kumin said.

According to listed price valuation, advertising spending by Hungarian companies dropped 4.4% in the first half, Kantar Media has found. Advertising revenues of the leading two television channels decreased by 14% and 15% as they reduced prices but maintained the volume of advertisements.

Ringier is asking Ft 1.5 billion for Népszabadság from the Szabad Sajtó (Free Press) foundation of the Socialist Party, plus a minimum five-year contract for printing the daily. In addition Ringier is asking for an agreement with no time limit on distributing the daily by Médialog, the company owned by Ringier, as well as outsourcing accounting and finance to Ringier, news weekly HVG has learnt.
