Almost 72% of Hungarians buy Christmas presents on the internet and close to 43% use mobile devices to buy gifts, according to an international survey ordered by online payments system operator PayPal. The survey, conducted by market researcher GfK, covered more than 5,000 internet users over the age of 18 in five countries. Those buying presents online use several payment methods.

Retail food sales in Hungary rose 5% in the twelve months to November from a year earlier, market research company Nielsen said. In absolute terms, revenue came to 1,465 billion forints during the period.

The black market for cigarettes in Hungary has grown to 12.1% of total sales, market research company GfK Hungária said. A little more than a year ago, GfK Hungária said illegal sales of cigarettes accounted for 7.7% of total turnover. In its latest release, the market researcher said the rate had reached 11.8% by the end of last year, but noted there had been “restructuring” on the market.

About 40% of Hungarian consumers are willing to drive 15 minutes to reach a shopping centre, and one-quarter would drive more than half an hour, according to a survey by property consultant CBRE. Only Scandinavians are willing to drive longer than Hungarians to do their shopping, the survey shows.
