This week the Hungarian Central Statistics Office (KSH) announced that local retail sales fell 2.7% - year-on-year - in March 2012. Also adjusted for seaonal effects, retail sales were down in April by 1.0% compared to the same month in 2011. Overall 2011 retail sales were slightly up on 2010 by 0.2% , rising that year for the first time since 2006.

The total value of goods bought online reached Ft 155 billion last year, research institute GKI reported. The 1.4 million people who made online purchases amount to 35% of the population above age 14. The leading products sold are food or food-related goods, GKI pointed out.

"Book retailer Lira will close 8-10 outlets in 2012, due to political and economic uncertainty, chairman Tamas Kolosi told Napi Gazdasag. The chain has not opened any new shops in the past two years as demand on the book market started to fall in 2008. Demand hit bottom in the first half of 2011 but recovered slightly in the second half, Kolosi said.

"French shopping centre operator Klepierre-Ségécé opens its new mall Corvin Bevásárlóközpont in Budapest’s Eighth District today (Wednesday). Klepierre is aiming to establish a new retail style with Corvin. Mid-category brands will be offered over a large area, said sales director Francois Noble. The 65,000m2 four-storey mall will host 130 shops and hopes to attract 400,000 customers.
