World renowned Spanish tenor Placido Domingo will perform at a charity ball to be held at the Budapest Opera House on February 6, 2016. The Shakespeare Ball will be part of a series of exclusive balls re-launched by the opera in 2014, the Opera said. Richard III performed in traditional Chinese costume will head the eleventh Shakespeare Festival in Gyula, in south-eastern Hungary. The National Theatre of China’s performance with traditional Chinese music is imbued with the concept of yin-yang, representing the dual personality of the main character, József Gedeon, director of the Gyula Castle Theatre, said.

The 22nd Budapest International Book Festival is to open with around 400 events on Thursday at Budapest’s Millenáris Park. The book fair’s star guest this year will be American writer Jonathan Franzen, whose self-biographical novel Discomfort Zone will be introduced to the public on Saturday. During the festival’s four days, Hungary will host the world’s largest book store.

The Gyula Castle Theatre operates in the court of the only gothic brick fortress that has survived in Central-Europe. Between 3rd – 13th July 2014 the guests will be entertained with great variety of performances which are available not only the court of the fortress that is turned into a theatre, but also on the nearby lake-stage and on stages set up at different places around.
