The Hungarian mortality rate is almost 50% higher than the average of the most developed EU15 countries, according to a study included in the Central Statistics Office publication Demographic Portrait 2012. The death rate here is also higher than in those countries that joined the EU simultaneously or later than Hungary.

The number of guest nights that foreigners spent in commercial accommodation rose 11% year-on-year in May to 1.06 million, the Central Statistics Office (KSH) has announced. The number of foreign guests was up 8.8% to 386,000. The number of guest nights spent by German, Austrian, Italian and Russian tourists rose.

Inflation stood at 5.6% in June, above analysts’ forecasts, after rising 5.3% year-on-year in May, the Central Statistics Office announced last week. Core inflation, stripping out the impacts of energy and food prices, was 4.9%. The spike in consumer prices was due to higher taxes, including VAT and excise taxes, analysts said. Excluding these effects, inflation rose 3.4% year-on-year in June.

The cost of living in Hungary is lower than in all but three other EU countries, according to the EU statistics office Eurostat. Prices of goods and services in Hungary were 64% of the EU average in 2011, Eurostat found. Alcohol and tobacco were cheaper in Hungary than in any other EU country, at 63% of the average.
