Parliament yesterday approved an amendment to the Sunday closing law, ordering retail units at petrol stations to remain closed if they themselves do not sell fuel. Opposition parties on Monday criticised the renewed programme structure of Hungary’s public media. The changes launched on March 15 by the Media Service Support and Asset Management Fund (MTVA) include a 24-hour rolling news channel on the frequency formerly occupied by the main channel.

The cabinet has decided to extend the ban on Sunday retail activity, to take effect on 15 March, to world heritage sites, government spokesman András Giró-Szász has said. In addition to large areas in central Budapest, the decision will affect the towns of Sátoraljaújhely, Szerencs, Sárospatak and Tokaj in the Tokaj historical wine region in northeastern Hungary.
