A series of protests and clashes with police culminated with a gathering of 2,000 people who rallied Wednesday evening to protest against the construction of a Museum Quarter in Budapest’s City Park. Police cut the chains of protesters who had chained themselves to buildings and trees. Police also found evidence of marijuana use and launched criminal proceedings.

Budapest police BRFK removed 33 activists from a construction site at the City Park and detained one person. BRFK said that the protesters had pulled down a cordon and entered the site to stage a demonstration, but the event “lost the character of a peaceful gathering as defined in the constitution”.
