- 11 Jul 2012 9:00 AM
- food & drink
If you are American, you probably also miss the hell out of Ben & Jerry's ice cream. But I found a great ice cream place recently. There is a little hole-in-the-wall place called Fragola at Nagymezo u. 7 past the Radnoti Theater and next to a fruit and veg stand that has the best ice cream I have ever had in Budapest.

Half a billion forints was set aside for this purpose. The members of the thirteen-member committee went from county to county to gather items deemed worthy of inclusion on this list. These national treasures are varied, from the Holy Crown ...
Xpat Opinion: By Treehugger Dan: Balaton Swim 2012
- 10 Jul 2012 9:00 AM
- sport
After doing my first Balaton Swim with Kevin Jackson 3 years ago for charity (raising money for the Hungarian Fair Trade Campaign), I have impatiently been waiting to do a second. Two years ago, after many weather postponements, the event was cancelled. Last year I had to pull out with 3 slipped disks. In what must be a first, the event this year went off without a hitch the first try, thus ...
Xpat Opinion: Why I Hate The Poosta Ramblers By Treehugger Dan
- 5 Jul 2012 10:50 AM
- entertainment
I hate the Poosta Ramblers because they are so damned good that I do not want to risk going to the toilet and missing anything. It becomes painful, but it is all for a good cause. Saturday's concert at Gondozo was no different. Following the departure from Budapest of Sugar Rae Hammond, Fiona Stewart stepped in with some lead vocals and her fiddle.

For a country which boasts centuries of wine tradition, Hungary does not have so much of a wine-bar culture. But I have identified five places in Budapest, which are very much fun to go and have a glass of Hungarian wine, writes Dr. Christian G.E. Schiller. Read on for his opinion about Doblo, Drop Shop, DiVino, Klassz, and Bock.
Xpat Opinion: Pizza - The Only Time Topless Isn't Fun
- 5 Jul 2012 9:00 AM
- food & drink
By Treehugger Dan: I wish I could recommend some great pizza in Budapest, but I have yet to encounter one. Il Treno used to have a good garlicy sauce on theirs, as did Via Luna, but it has been many years since I have been to either of these restaurants. New York Pizza's pizza is also good (everything else on their menu I have tried is great, especially their lunch menu). Any suggestions?
A Weekend In Borsod County By Treehugger Dan

- getting around
Chris, Nora and Gabi came down to the house this weekend. It was chill-out time for them, while I also had to try to deal with the large snake I almost stepped on three weeks ago in the stables. In the morning I whipped up a batch of my famous blueberry pancakes. A friendly expert from Aggtelek National Park came around noon and looked for signs, but did not find anything.
Xpat Opinion: Best Child-Friendly Restaurants & Cafes In Budapest
- 28 Jun 2012 9:00 AM
- food & drink
By Andi Lustak: The non-smoking ban in Hungary finally came into effect in January in all restaurants and bars and it has already made a huge difference with most establishments complying with the law. From April restaurants who don’t comply can get fined up to 1 million HUF. This is great and gave me the chance to move away from just focusing on finding the best non-smoking places and instead ...
Xpat Opinion: Land Grabbing Fidesz Style

A few days ago Gáspár Miklós Tamás (TGM, as most people refer to him in Hungarian) was the guest of Olga Kálmán on ATV’s Egyenes beszéd (Straight Talk). The topic was the growing Horthy cult fostered by the Fidesz government. TGM indicated that in his opinion the Orbán government’s sudden attachment to the Horthy regime is nothing but an attempt to draw attention away from the government’s grave ...
