Martin Garrix may not be a superhero or a secret agent, but he does possess two identities. A 17-year-old student by day, but when the sun goes down he can be found behind the decks in front of packed hotspots and festivals across the globe, fraternizing with electronic dance music royalty, tirelessly producing in the studio, and dropping records.

There is a process we all go through when we first play the new album by a band whose debut we evangelised about. Nerves need to be steadied and fears dispelled before we can pass anything approaching calm and clear-headed judgment. With luck, our ardour will be rekindled, our faith reaffirmed. And all of us will, at some time or another, have had the unhappy experience of dashed hopes and shattered illusions, so there’s that niggling worry lurking at the back of our minds, too.

  • Ellie Goulding (UK) @ Sziget Budapest, 13 August 9.30 pm

    • 10 Aug 2015 9:00 AM

Never likely to be one of those singers who is content just to turn up, lay down a main vocal part and leave, Ellie’s approach to writing and recording is, she admits, borderline obsessive – but then, anything less, she says, would be a waste of time. As her debut album, Lights, made so thrillingly clear, Ellie Goulding uses her voice as a texture in much the same way that a skilled instrumentalist would.

  • The Maccabees (UK) @ Sziget Budapest, 13 August 4 pm

    • 10 Aug 2015 9:00 AM

The Maccabees are an indie rock band from London, England. They have released four albums so far: Colour It In in 2007, followed by Wall of Arms in 2009, Given to the Wild which was released on 9 January 2012 and their most recent album Marks To Prove It released on 31 July 2015. The band came up with the name by flicking through the Bible and picking out a random word. Despite adopting a name with religious connotations, lead singer Orlando Weeks has more recently affirmed, in an interview on Steve Lamacq's BBC Radio 1 show, that none of the band is religious. Their lyrics often include an atheistic theme, in particular their second album's title track, "Wall of Arms" and "All in Your Rows" from their debut album.

  • Interpol (USA), Sziget Budapest, 13 August 11.45pm

There were no guarantees that Interpol would make another record. Following the departure of bassist Carlos Dengler at the end of sessions for their 2010 self-titled LP and a relentless marathon of more than 200 shows in support of it, the band's remaining members—guitarist Daniel Kessler, singer/guitarist Paul Banks, and drummer Sam Fogarino—took a two-and-a-half year break. For the first time, they all lived in different cities, providing both geographic and mental distance from all things Interpol.
