EU Challenges Hungary’s Road Construction Bidding Rules
Hungary is set to lose 170 billion forints (EUR 562m) over discrepancies the European Commission has found in its road construction bidding rules, the daily Magyar Nemzet said on Thursday. Brussels objects to Hungary’s exclusion of bidders from road construction projects without nearby asphalt units.

The rule prevents companies with mobile asphalt units from participating in tenders, the paper said. The Commission could withhold 25% of the 675 billion forints worth of funding committed for road construction projects.

Although it is likely that Hungary would be allowed to spend these funds on other projects, this should prove difficult given that projects administered in the 2007-2013 development period must be finished by the end of 2015.

János Lázár, the head of the Prime Minister’s Office, is scheduled to meet Johannes Hahn, the EU’s Commissioner for Regions, next Tuesday and the matter is likely to come up at the meeting, the paper said.
