FH Sees Democracy Losing Ground In Hungary
The decline of Hungarian governance in the past few years is the most shocking reminder that democratisation is neither complete nor irreversible in post-Communist Europe, US-based human rights group Freedom House writes in its latest annual study, Népszabadság reports.

“The ruling coalition effectively completed the takeover of independent state institutions” last year by appointing additional members to the Constitutional Court and delegating former economy minister György Matolcsy to lead the central bank, the report adds.

While the government increased its influence over several public institutions, Freedom House writes, “power within the government has been concentrated in the hands of the prime minister”.
