Xpat Opinion: The Train Park In Budapest
A few weeks ago we visited Vasut Torteneti Park, aka The Train Park. In retrospect, I cannot comprehend how did we not go there earlier, after all we have heard about the place since our year one in Budapest. It has everything we can ask for: it’s a well kept park, with a variety of old trains, plus showrooms of model trains, plus food stands, plus a mini train. I mean, really, if I had to design the best park for my kids, it will include all the list above.

Yet, it took us three years to get there. And once we got in we walked for about two wonderful minutes and enjoyed the beautiful facility and then it started to rain heavily. Really, timing god? Really?

Never mind, we found an old engine and squeezed ourselves into it.

We thought we’ll hang out in the engine until it stopped raining, but the minutes passed and the rain didn’t. So we reminded ourselves that we’re not made of sugar and started wondering between the amazing mighty engines they have there.

They were really giant and in order to get into them I had to climb this rusty and now wet ladder while the rain poured on me. This is me looking at my dirty wet hands and my soaked clothes and wishing I was at home on the sofa with a chocolate bar and a Buffy marathon:

The kids however payed no attention to the rain and were happy to be in the engines

The engines were truly massive and impressive and we had loads of fun with them.

Then we went into a big shed and discovered it was hosting the Crystals Collectors Annual Fair. In other words, it was a giant hanger packed with people and hundreds of boxes with tiny expensive fragile stones. Basically, the last place you want to walk in with two energetic little boys.

By the time we went out we discovered the rain had stopped and a truly impressive train was standing in front of us: The Orient Express.

I was really impressed by this and was very happy to take a tour inside.

And they have a few compartments kept with all the details, such as fancy china and all.

We have managed to get out of the Orient Express without any of the boys breaking anything with historic value. Huzzah!

From there we went to the two model trains showrooms they have. Like you would expect, the kids were fascinated. And daddy too.

We ended our visit with a ride on their mini train. It was actually a lot of fun, it goes all around the park, including a tunnel and a bridge. Everyone enjoyed that one.

So we will be back. Definitely recommended for a nice weather day.
