Hungarian President Addresses Commemorations Of 1849 Arad Martyrs

“Would the Austro-Hungarian compromise of 1867, Hungary’s European-level modernisation ... or its rebirth in the 20th century have been possible [without such patriots]?” Áder said at the commemoration event in Újvárfalva, in southwest Hungary.
Speaking at a memorial event in Budapest, Defence Minister István Simicskó said the revolution of 1848/49 was “an unforgettable period of Hungarians finding their national consciousness”.
Commemorations started with the national flag flying at half-mast in front of parliament with a military salute at 9am. October 6 was declared a national day of mourning in 2001.d a national day of mourning in 2001.
