Xpat Opinion: Racist Serial Killers’ Life Sentence
- 14 Jan 2016 8:00 AM
In its front page editorial, Népszabadság welcomes the sentence passed by the Kúria, the Supreme Court. The three murderers killed six Roma, including a child in a series of night attacks on randomly selected Roma targets in 2008 and 2009, with the intention of provoking inter-ethnic clashes and ultimately a general war against the Roma minority. They were sentenced to life imprisonment in the first instance.
Hungary’s top court approved that verdict on Tuesday. The left-wing daily would have expected the general public to show more passion in condemning the murderers and accuses the population of indifference towards what happened. Népszabadság thinks this shows a lack of moral resilience and cohesion.
