Hungary’s National Health Insurance Fund Manager (NEAK) paid out more than 7 billion forints (EUR 22.6m) to finance treatments abroad last year, daily Magyar Idők said. NEAK paid about 5.2 billion of the amount to cover emergency care for Hungarians abroad.
A little more than 2 billion forints went toward healthcare procedures that are not yet available in Hungary. NEAK approved 574 applications for such funding last year.
Nearly all of the procedures were undertaken in Europe; in Germany, Austria and The Netherlands.
