By Áron Halász, vice - president of Hungarian Cyclists' Club: Cycling as a mode of transport in Budapest has become a real trend in the past 10 years.
It started as a sub-culture, but gained huge popularity thanks to the strong bike advocacy, positive campaigns, various stakeholders joining the cause and the recent infrastructural developments such as the bike-share system, new bike lanes and more than 160 one-way streets opened for two-way cycling.
Cycling now makes up approximately seven percent of transport modes in daily trips according to a recent survey, which means more than 10 percent in the city centre. Right now the biggest obstacle to accelerate cycling growth is the bad condition or lack of dedicated cycle lanes and the lack of effective traffic calming measures. Cycling is popular in Hungary, but big cities still face the problems caused by decades of car-centric urban development.
