Budapest city council announced the first Cafés Night last year to revive and popularise the by now slightly forgotten Budapest café traditions that were so highly present in the 19th century, the organisers wrote in a statement. Last year’s event drew about 4,000 visitors.

Those who visit cafés that night can hear about the history of cafés and coffee itself and can choose to be entertained by musical, theatrical and literary shows.

Cafés involved in the programme include the Gerbeaud, Centrál, Dunapark and Hadik cafés.
