Aid Planned for Independent Theatres in Budapest Facing Difficulties
The city of Budapest will set up a programme to support independent and private theatres in Budapest facing difficulties due to “interrupted state subsidies”, the mayor’s office told MTI.

According to a statement from the municipality, several theatres were facing closure due to a lack of central funding and the city has decided to shift 150 million forints (EUR 364,000) from its own budget to finance municipally operated theatres in the city.

Theatres that relied on state support earlier but have not yet received their subsidies in 2022 can apply for the city’s assistance, the statement said.

The statement also said that despite the aid programme, Budapest “will not take over the government’s responsibility to finance (theatres) in any way”.
