Shops Warned About "Playing Tricks” With Food Price Caps, HUF 1 Billion Fines Issued
Consumer protection checks and controls have been continuous since the price caps on specified foods were introduced and more than Ft 1 billion in fines have been meted out by the authorities, “which sends a message to shops that it is not worth playing tricks”, government spokeswoman Alexandra Szentkirályi stressed at a press conference.

Following standard government rhetoric, she blamed the Russia-Ukraine war and EU sanctions on Russia for the inflation rate, which is the highest in Europe.

She said inflation is falling thanks to government measures, adding that government would like to see inflation drop to a single-digit figure by the end of the year.

Justice Ministry under-secretary for constitutional legislation and consumer protection Nóra Kupecki stressed that shops that repeatedly violate the law can expect higher fines.
