Traffic Jams in Budapest Reduced by 9%, Says Mayor
Car drivers in Budapest spent 9% less time in traffic jams in 2022 than in 2019, mayor Gergely Karácsony said yesterday, citing data from TomTom navigation systems.

In contrast, the number of forced waiting times increased sharply under his predecessor István Tarlós, he added.

“The city administration of that period made people from Budapest believe that we could drive without restrictions in the city, and the result was long queues of cars on busy roads,” according to Karácsony.

“In contrast,” he continued, we are primarily providing a sustainable alternative to car use: affordable and competitive public transport, safe and comfortable cycling, and walking in more and more places and in a suitable environment”.
