New Law in Hungary Allows Award of Military Ranks for Donations
It has been revealed that a new law in force from July allows the award of military ranks for donations or patriotic acts, HVG reports.

So far, no one has been awarded these ranks, and no applications are in progress.

The law states that the Defence Minister may award the ranks of colonel and lieutenant colonel to a person who promotes the social image of the Forces by making a contribution, whether pecuniary or non-pecuniary, to a specific agreement for defence purposes.

The special ranks do not grant 'real' military status.

State secretary for defence Tamas Vargha said earlier that the initiative aims to strengthen ties between society and the Defence Forces.

Former president Katalin Novak's husband, Istvan Veres, retains his lieutenant colonel rank in the voluntary reserve, despite her resignation.

Veres's high rank of general officer, awarded after five weeks of training, was justified by his public role but later revoked.
