Out of the world’s 30,000 universities 12 Hungarian institutions are in the top 5 percent, while three -- Eotvos Lorand University, the University of Szeged and the University of Debrecen -- are in the top 2 percent, Balazs Hanko told public news channel M1.
The QS World University Rankings takes into account teaching, research, industry income, international outlook and the university’s international outlook, Hanko said, adding that Hungarian institutions had made significant progress in almost all of those categories over the last five years.
The government rolled out its higher education reforms five years ago, taking into consideration the recommendations of university senates which had asked for a more flexible, performance-oriented and autonomous model, the minister said.
The number of international publications by Hungarian universities has increased by 50 percent over the last five years, and universities have improved cooperation with economic players, he said. More and more international students are applying to study here, and the number of patents filed has increased seven-fold, he added.
Speaking to public broadcaster Kossuth Radio, Hanko said Hungarian university students acquired knowledge that they could put to use on the labour market, adding that those with higher-education degrees find jobs in 42 days on average.
The culture and innovation ministry said in a statement that the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the University of Pecs had both risen in the QS World University Rankings, the former to the 711-720 range and the latter to the 741-751 range.
The Szechenyi Istvan University of Gyor, Obuda University and the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences are ranked in the 1001-1200 band, while the University of Miskolc and Pannon University are ranked in the 1200-1400 band.
Meanwhile, the Times Higher Education international rankings now includes 12 Hungarian universities, the statement said.
The University of Debrecen and the University of Szeged are ranked among the top 400 institutions, while Szechenyi Istvan University the Hungarian University of Agriculture and Life Sciences have risen to the 401-600 band.
