Traditional Fish Soup Festival in Hungary to be Held Again this Saturday
The Tiszacsege Fish Soup Festival will be held for the 17th time this year on July 5, the organizers announced at a press conference at the local fisherman's inn.

Inn owner Sándor Nagy reminded us that the event was launched to promote the Tisza River bank, the fishing inn, and fish consumption, and that today guests come from almost all parts of the country, as well as from neighboring countries, to the all-day event, which traditionally takes place on the first Saturday of July.

János Szalai, the manager of the Tiszacsege Fisherman's Inn, recalled that in the first version, the fish soup was made in two cauldrons, now they will cook seven thousand portions of traditional and Korhely fish soup for the guests in 15 cauldrons, using about two tons of fish.

The fish soup is flavored with 50 kilograms of red pepper and about 200 kilograms of red onion, while they fry 800-1000 horseshoe carp and 41 kilograms of bream during the day, he added.

The inn manager also said that the fish soup prepared outdoors is offered at a significant discount on Saturday, and according to their experience, many people also buy their Christmas fish dish at this time, which they store frozen until then.

The inn staff have been working continuously for a week to get everything ready for the festival on Saturday: the fires are lit under the cauldrons at 2 am so that the large amount of fish soup is ready in time - said János Szalai.

Sándor Nagy said that guests of the fish soup festival will also be welcomed with a full-day of cultural programs.

Traditionally every year, the Abrakazabra band will perform a solo concert on the Tisza-bank stage, there will be a Tina Turner memorial concert with the participation of Linda Király, Réka Koós, Jennifer Szirota, Máté Gudics and Abrakazabra, there will be street music with the Agyagbanda and the Számadó band, the local cheerleading group will perform, and later in the evening, Janika Kocsis will play.

Organizer Zsolt Szalai added that a flea market with the participation of thirty vendors, folk artists and folk craftspeople will be held on the banks of the Tisza River, and an amusement park will also be set up for children.

Zoltán Lévai, the owner of the Tiszacsege ferry, said that on the day of the festival, the ferry will run continuously between the Csege shore and Ároktő from six in the morning until midnight. The local marina will also offer walking, adventure and sports boating.

Fish soup and Hungarian fish soup – no two the same. Even though Hungary is not a “nation of fishermen” the native fish soup, which is made only from freshwater varieties, is one of the country’s most popular dishes, and is even considered to be a national specialty.
