Szalay-Bobrovniczky: Security of Hungarians demonstrated at Adaptive Hussars 2025 national defence exercise
The guarantee of security for the Hungarian people is being demonstrated at the Adaptive Hussars 2025 national defence exercise, which is the largest military exercise since post-communist transformation, the defence minister said on Thursday, 26 September.
The army'a entire spectrum of capabilities is being demonstrated at the joint government and joint forces exercise, Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky said during a visitor's day at the Hungarian army's central training and firing range near Hajmasker, western Hungary.
The exercise is taking place within the framework of NATO, with the participation of Croatian, Italian, and Turkish soldiers alongside Hungarians, bringing together different types of weapons, communication methods, and command practices from several nations, he added.
Such a nationwide defence exercise, he said, was unusual within NATO countries. During the exercise, not only the armed forces but also local governments and public administration play a role, "acting as if there was a state of war and performing their duties in this situation".
He said the lessons learnt from an exercise launched in 2023 under the name Adaptive Hussars 2023 will be used during Adaptive Hussars 2025.
During the exercise, "in response to a hypothetical external armed attack on the country, a significant military force will be mobilised ... to defend the national border," he said.
The joint exercise involves 22,000 people, including a significant number of reservists, he said, adding that the number of reservists has increased by more than 40 percent in the past two to three years.
Szalay-Bobrovniczky: Some 22,000 soldiers to participate in Exercise Adaptive Hussars 2025
Some 22,000 soldiers, including professional staff and reservists, will participate in the military exercise dubbed Adaptive Hussars 2025 in the next six weeks, the defence minister said on Friday.
Kristof Szalay-Bobrovniczky said on Facebook that Adaptive Hussars 2025 was an exercise planned over several years based on a fictitious scenario.
He added that it was carried under under the arrangements of NATO, with support from NATO partner countries, and with the participation of soldiers from Slovakia and the US.
The military exercise is based on the premise of Hungary being subjected to an armed attack and tests how this would be thwarted within the country borders, he said.
He added that "in order for the Hungarian army to successfully carry out its operations, several elements and administrative units of the Hungarian government were also necessary".
