Double Anniversary Concert Ahead at Liszt Academy Budapest
- 7 Oct 2025 7:13 AM
The Festival Academy Budapest (FAB) was founded by the violinist couple Barnabás Kelemen and Katalin Kokas, the SoNoRo festival was founded by violist Razvan Popovici, and the artists are celebrating the double jubilee with an international concert series.
The first stop will be in Berlin on October 21st, followed by a concert in Budapest on October 25th, and finally the series will conclude in Bucharest.
SoNoRo is a series of musical events, an intellectual community, and an artistic vision. This year's anniversary program, entitled Romanian Rhapsody, is a look back at the past two decades, while also offering new perspectives on the reception of classical music.
SoNoRo enriches its musical programs with the tools of architecture, film, photography, literature, psychology, dance and theater, bringing a disruptive, experimental and playful spirit to Romanian and European chamber music life.
The participants in the anniversary events include members of the SoNoRo artistic community, including from the Hungarian side the founders of FAB, Katalin Kokas and Barnabás Kelemen, who are regular performers at the festival, as is the artistic director of SoNoRo, Razvan Popovici, a recurring guest at the Festival Academy Budapest festivals.
The concert program evokes the rich Central European chamber music tradition of the first half of the 20th century.
Enescu's Distant Serenade is followed by Fauré's Piano Trio in D minor. The piano quartet version of Enescu's elemental Romanian Rhapsody No. 1, woven with folk motifs, shows the intertwining of folklore and concert hall tradition.
After the intermission, Bartók's rarely heard work Contrasts, featuring a unique instrumentation, will bring to life the energies of Hungarian and Balkan folk music inspiration, and finally, the concert will close with Dohnányi's Piano Quintet No. 1. Among the contributors will be Justus Grimm (cello), Diana Ketler (piano) and Thorsten Johanns (clarinet).
