Heavy Snow in Hungary: Shocking Cold Hits Some Areas, Authorities Warn Drivers
Hungary faces severe winter conditions this week, with temperatures dropping to -19°C, with up to 10cm of snow in some places, and persistent freezing rain.

Snow cover was expected nationwide by Tuesday morning, potentially challenging transport and MÁV services after last winter’s collapse.

Transport Minister János Lázár assured the public that preparations are underway, as 739 winter maintenance vehicles, 213 salt spreaders and 2,301 specialists will be deployed in 12-hour shifts.

Authorities have stockpiled more than 80,000 tons of road salt, with 24-hour on-call service for roads and railways.

Public roads authority Magyar Közút will clear expressways first, then main roads, and finally secondary roads, repeating as needed until surfaces are fully clear.

Car drivers are urged to travel only with winter-ready vehicles, to check weather forecasts, and monitor current traffic conditions.

As of April 1, 2026, the city has addressed these concerns by officially signing the Budapest Cycling Courier Road Safety Charter.
