New Budapest Trams Boost Accessible Public Transport in Capital
- 19 Jan 2026 11:05 AM
The new tram is part of a larger fleet upgrade: 51 CAF trams have been ordered, and deliveries are set to continue throughout the year, with each vehicle gradually entering service following certification.
Modern, Accessible, and Sustainable
The CAF trams are fully low-floor, air-conditioned, and designed for passenger comfort, ensuring accessibility for all. Once the new trams are fully integrated, low-floor vehicles will make up over 40 per cent of Budapest’s tram fleet, supporting equal access and more environmentally friendly urban transport.
EU funds, co-financed by the Hungarian state, are financing the procurement, reflecting ongoing support for sustainable city transport.
Expanding Presence Across the Network
The fleet renewal allows more CAF trams to appear on existing lines, including 1, 3, 17, 19, 42, 50, 56, 56A, and 61. Future plans aim to deploy modern trams on lines 2, 23, 24, and 62, with additional low-floor vehicles on lines 14 and 69. BKK is also exploring the feasibility of operating CAF trams on lines 47 and 49, depending on infrastructure readiness.
Infrastructure Upgrades Underway
Introducing the new vehicles requires significant investment in tram infrastructure, including power supply improvements, reconstruction of some terminals, and construction of new platforms. While EU funding for these upgrades is not yet confirmed, the city is committed to modernizing the network to accommodate the expanding fleet.
The ongoing upgrades signal a major step forward for Budapest’s urban transport, providing residents and visitors with more accessible, modern, and environmentally sustainable options for getting around the city.
