Iconic Citadella in Budapest Reopens to Public Soon
After years of extensive restoration and being hidden behind construction fences, Budapest’s iconic fortress atop Gellért Hill the Citadella is officially was set to reopen this Saturday 28 March, but it has been rescheduled due to forecasted strong winds expected this weekend.

Follow the Citadel's Facebook page for the new date of opening.

The ambitious project has transformed the formerly neglected military site into a vibrant community space, doubling down on its identity as a "Bastion of Freedom".

For the first time in over a decade, visitors will be able to explore the interior of the fortress and enjoy its world-class panoramas in a modern, accessible environment.

What’s New at the Citadella?

The renovation has stripped away the fortress's "closed" feel by cutting new passageways through the thick stone walls, including a grand white staircase leading up from the Liberty Statue.

Highlights include:

* A New Green Oasis: The inner courtyard has been turned into a 6,000-square-meter public park featuring lush lawns, rose gardens, and lavender.
* Panoramic Terraces: Several new viewing platforms, including the Rondella terrace and the Tetőkert 360 lookout tower, offer unparalleled views of the Danube, the Chain Bridge, and the historic city center.
* Amenities: A new café and gift shop have been integrated into the fortress grounds, making it a perfect spot for a long afternoon stroll.
* Accessibility: For the first time, the site features lifts and barrier-free pathways, ensuring everyone can reach the summit with ease.

Opening Weekend & "The Bastion of Freedom"

Following the official opening on March 28, a special inaugural program will run from March 29 to 31. During these three days, visitors can experience the new interactive exhibition, "The Bastion of Freedom."

Spanning nearly 2,000 square meters, the exhibition uses modern installations and film to tell the story of Hungary’s centuries-long struggle for independence. The experience is narrated by Emese, a legendary figure from Hungarian mythology, who guides guests through the country's past.

Important Visitor Note: Registration Required

While the park and most terraces will remain free to visit year-round, entry to the "Bastion of Freedom" exhibition and specific lookout towers is free of charge only during the opening weekend (March 29–31) and requires prior registration.

Expats and locals are encouraged to book their spots early at citadella.hu to secure a place, as demand for the first look is expected to be high.
