MVM Zold Generacio will drill to a depth of 2,400-2,500 meters to tap a 140- to 150-degree Celsius thermal water source, Lantos said. A 3.5-4.5 MW power plant could be built at the site, he added.

Of the 674,000 homes with district heating in Hungary, 10pc are heated with geothermal, but the use of geothermal to generate electricity is limited, he said.

MVM CEO Karoly Matrai called the project "a significant step" toward increased use of renewables and greater energy sovereignty.
