Insider's Guide: International Wine Festival in Buda Castle
Each September, Budapest’s historic Castle District transforms into a vibrant celebration of Hungarian wine and gastronomy. Celebrating a major milestone, the 35th Budapest Wine Festival will take place from Wednesday, 9 September to Saturday, 12 September 2026.

As one of the country's most prestigious cultural events, the festival welcomes tens of thousands of international visitors and local residents to explore the depth of local winemaking. Set against the breathtaking backdrop of Buda Castle — a UNESCO World Heritage site — the event offers a unique opportunity to sample thousands of distinct pours while taking in panoramic views over the Danube and the Pest skyline.

Key Highlights for 2026

A Shift in Schedule

For the first time in its history, the main festival will run strictly from Wednesday to Saturday, leaving Sunday open for recovery. This change promises four packed evenings of late-night parties and lively social atmospheres across the castle terraces.

The Americas in the Spotlight

This year’s official guest of honor is the American continent. Alongside hundreds of classic Hungarian labels, expats will have a rare chance to discover and taste unique New World profiles from North and South American wine regions.

VinAgora Interactive Wine Space

This popular educational zone returns, offering an experience-based, playful approach to understanding complex flavor profiles. It is a fantastic spot for newcomers to comfortably learn about local grape varieties without feeling intimidated.

The "Mitiszol?" Party VIP Zone

Located on the beautiful Savoyai Terrace, this premium upgraded area treats guests to exclusive natural wine selections, specialized gourmet bites, elegant lounge seating, and dedicated evening DJ sets.

Discover Hungary’s Wine Regions

The festival terraces bring all 22 of Hungary’s diverse wine regions directly to the capital. Expats can chat face-to-face with the winemakers, comparing crisp whites from Badacsony, elegant Furmints from Tokaj, full-bodied reds like Cabernet Franc or Merlot from Villány, and complex blends from Eger.

Beyond the traditional stalls, look out for the specialized Premier booths where wineries officially debut their newest, never-before-tasted vintages to the public.

Food, Culture, and Atmosphere

The festival grounds operate as a massive gourmet promenade. Upscale street food stands and top-tier local restaurants serve up high-quality pairings, ranging from artisanal local cheeses and mangalica pork specialties to fresh chimney cakes (kürtőskalács) and oven-baked flatbreads (lángos).

Multiple stages positioned throughout the courtyards host live acoustic acts, folk performances, and world music, keeping the atmosphere celebratory well into the evening.

Practical Information & Local Tips

Hours & Location

The festival is hosted across the main terraces of the Royal Palace (including the Savoy, Hunyadi, and Lion Courtyards). Please note that regular public access to these castle areas is restricted to ticket holders during festival hours.

Cashless System

The entire event operates completely on a cashless basis. You can use standard contactless Mastercard or Visa cards, or opt for a top-up Festipay card available at the gates.

Bring the Family

The event is highly family-friendly. Entry is entirely free for children under the age of 14, and staff at the cashiers provide security wristbands where parents can write their contact details.

Ticket Inclusions

Every standard day ticket or multi-day pass includes a high-quality crystal tasting glass, a handy glass-holder neck bag, and complimentary entry to all on-site concerts and professional masterclasses.

Getting There

Parking around the Castle District is strictly limited, so public transit is highly recommended. From Deák Ferenc tér in the city center, take the Bus 16 directly up to the castle. Alternatively, you can ride the M2 Metro to Széll Kálmán tér and catch the 16A castle minibus, or take a scenic ride up the historic Buda Castle Funicular (Sikló) from Clark Ádám tér.
