For something completely different, head beneath the streets of the Castle District. The Buda Castle Cave combines natural limestone caves with man-made cellars and passages that have been shaped by centuries of human use.

Guided tours reveal a hidden 3.3-kilometre cave system associated with the Castle Hill, including medieval cellar spaces, WWII shelters and even a former prison. The standard tour covers 1.5 km and takes around 90 minutes, while a shorter 45-minute option covers 600 metres.

The passages are well lit and paved, making this much more of a historical underground walking tour than a traditional caving trip.

Best for: History, sightseeing and an unusual Castle District experience.

This is where a cave visit turns into a proper adventure. The Mátyás-hegyi Cave offers access to undeveloped sections of the Buda cave system, with crawling, climbing and squeezing through natural passages rather than simply walking along a paved tourist route.

Specialist adventure programmes can involve several hours underground, with participants provided with equipment such as helmets, headlamps and overalls. These tours are intended for physically fit participants and are very different from a conventional sightseeing cave tour.

Best for: Active visitors looking for a genuine caving experience.

This one is definitely not a conventional tourist cave tour. The Molnár János Cave is a spectacular underwater thermal cave system beneath Buda, explored by divers through its warm, exceptionally clear waters.

The water remains around 20–28°C, with fascinating rock and crystal formations beneath the surface. The cave centre organises diving and cave-diving courses, and experienced divers can arrange guided dives. Participants need appropriate diving qualifications and experience; this is a specialist adventure rather than a casual sightseeing attraction.

Best for: Experienced divers seeking a truly unusual Budapest adventure.

The most well-known conventional cave trip in Budapest, Pál-völgyi Cave takes visitors through the developed section of Hungary's longest known cave system.

The approximately one-hour guided tour features unusual rock formations, stalactites, narrow passages and large underground chambers.

The cave remains around 11°C throughout the year, making it an especially appealing escape during a hot Budapest summer. Tours normally run hourly, and private English-language tours can also be arranged in advance.

Best for: A classic guided cave experience.

If Pál-völgyi sounds a little too adventurous, Szemlő-hegyi is the easier option.
The approximately one-hour guided tour follows well-developed passages and showcases spectacular mineral formations created by thermal water, including the cave's famous popcorn- and cauliflower-like formations.

The cave is maintained at about 12°C, and unlike many underground attractions, the developed route is wheelchair and pushchair accessible. An audio-guide app is available in several languages, including English.

Best for: Families, first-time cave visitors and an easy underground outing.
