1. Where did you grow up?
I grew up in the countryside, in a little town called Tokod near Esztergom. I went to Dobó Katalin Secondary School, which was the best school in Komárom - Esztergom County at that time. I was quite proud and thankful to be able to study there, most of my fundamental values, motivations and ambitions were acquired from the brightest teachers in the best environment.
2. If you could be an expat anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
I would choose the United States as I think it is still the land of opportunities. I firmly believe in self-made-men and if a country believes in such hard-working creatures too, then it must be an inspiring place to live in.
3. What would you miss most if you moved away from Hungary?
I would miss my friends mostly. What I would not miss at all is the pessimistic and negative attitude of my fellow citizens. This is a “Hungarikum” I dislike the most.
4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
They say New York never sleeps, but I think it is true for Budapest as well. There is always something happening in the city, if it is not a concert, it is an exciting exhibition or a theatre performance, or some festival or a culinary fair with wine tasting. If they are lucky, they can catch one of these and they won’t be disappointed. MÜPA for example always provides the best selection of cultural events, from temporary exhibits to classical, popular and world music, so they should not miss a night in the Palace of Arts either.
5. What is your favourite food?
If I had to choose one thing, that I would have to eat for the rest of my life, it would be seafood for sure. It’s delicious, it’s healthy and I can never get bored with it.
6. What is your favourite sport / form of exercise?
I do not only follow, but play football and in order to stay healthy and fit I like to work out with my friends. It is my idea of leisure and recreation.
7. What is your favourite place in Hungary?
I must say, it is the Danube Bend, just the north of Budapest. The wonderful landscape of the area inspired several painters (like István Szőnyi, one of my personal favourites) and the wooded hills of Pilis, Visegrád and Börzsöny with the meandering Danube are perfect for sporting and daytrips as well.
8. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
I would like to be a professional football player with the physical condition of my twenties and the strategic thinking of the 2012 edition of Gábor Soós. I think it would work out and I would have a lot of fun!
9. What’s a job you would definitely never want?
I would never be a bureaucrat. Constrains associated with working in a public office is not my piece of cake.
10. Where did you spend your last vacation?
My wife and I went to Paris for a long weekend a couple of weeks ago. I can speak French and I studied and lived in Paris for a year, but it was a long time ago. It was exciting to revisit and since my wife has never been there I wanted to show her everything. It was an active kind of holiday, but surely an enjoyable one.
11. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
I would love to visit the “Wild Wild West” in the USA and sneak a peak into the scenes of the books I read as a child. I would also visit the real Mexico, not the one that is set apart and sugar-coated for tourists, but the exotic and adventurous side of the coin. I’m also interested in St. Petersburg, it is definitely going to be one of our next destinations.
12. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
My favorite band is Tankcsapda, a Hungarian rock-and-roll co. of musicians. They are very honest, their lyrics are meaningful (and maybe a bit obscene for the taste of the mainstream) and they also deliver amazing concerts.
When it comes to movies I prefer sci-fi, action and thrillers with Bruce Willis, Al Pacino, Robert De Niro or Jason Statham. They are kind of “meant-to-be-men” which I particularly enjoy in every character.
My hobbies are the same since I was a teenager: sport and music. I have always loved to ski, play football or basketball and I can play the guitar too.
13. What can’t you resist?
An excellent cup of coffee in the company of my friends or family.
14. Red wine or white?
I tend to be quite conservative when it comes to the choice of wines and it depends on the occasion as well. I often drink red at night, but summer nights are only for rosés on ice and I always choose some pleasant white for fish courses.
15. Book or movie?
It has always been both, but nowadays the scale starts to tilt in favour of movies a little. It is something I can do in the company of my family and I do not need glasses for it – he laughs.
16. Morning person or night person?
I’m definitely a night person. I can stay up all night and have a good time until dawn if that is the case. This might be the reason why winter does not depress me as much as others, because I can be very active and vivid after sunset as well. In the morning however I tend to be very quiet and sometimes even grumpy until my first cup of coffee.
17. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
I believe that the most crucial and acute problem of Hungary is the unreasonable waste and irresponsible redistribution of public goods – regardless of any political parties. It is high time to reconsider current practices and stop misleading the society.
18. Buda or Pest side?
I do not doubt the cultural and nightlife importance of Pest, but in my opinion Buda is a more pleasant place to live. We do not only live in the Buda side, but our offices are there as well. Buda is nature; it has all the necessary components of a comfortable and healthy way of life from gyms, through spas, to forests, mountains and every possible means of sporting and having a good time.
19. Which achievement in your life are you most pleased about?
My beautiful family and the fact that everything have gone according to plan so far. If you really want to achieve something and you try hard enough it happens eventually, I believe.
20. What would you say is your personal motto?
It’s a quote from a song of LGT (Gábor Presser – Dusán Sztevanovity in particular) about life:
„Mindenki tudja, hogy ennyi az egész:
Az élet csak arasznyi repülés, földtől a földig.
A világnak mindegy, hogy meddig élsz,
de neked és nekem ez most az egyetlen,
az első s az utolsó bevetés.”
„Everyone knows, that is all:
Life is a span of flight, from ground to ground.
The World does not care about your life
But for you and me, this is the only value,
The first and last mission.”
It speaks for itself.
