XpatLoop Interview: Callum McWaters Marketing Intern With Bakelit Multi Art Centre
Callum is a Media Communication and Marketing student at the University of Queensland, located in Brisbane Australia. Callum is in his final year of his undergraduate dual degree. Callum is in Budapest on a working exchange experience organised between the student group AIESEC and Bakelit Multi Art Centre.

Callum is working with Bakelit Mutli Art Centre as a marketing intern for six weeks. Callum is working with Bakelit to help increase the amount of international attendees to events that Bakelit hosts, as well as attracting some Australian artists to the centre.

In his home state of Queensland Callum is completing a cadetship with the Department of Education and Training Queensland.

1. When did you arrive in Hungary and what brought you here?
I arrived on the first of January 2013. I am here for a work exchange that I organised through a student group at my university. The student organisation is called AIESEC and my university is Queensland University of Technology located in Brisbane, Australia.

2. Have you ever been an expatriate elsewhere?
No I have never been an expatriate before. Even though I am only here for six weeks it's incredibly exciting! There is so much to see and do, and always someone new to meet.

3. What surprised you most about Hungary?
There is a really big difference in the attitude between the generations here. In every country and culture there are generational differences, but given the history it can be quite noticeable here. Also the pace where I work Bakelit Multi Art Centre. They have a very informative website, but not matter how much information you get you still have no clue what somewhere is going to be like. Especially when you spent your whole life on the other side of the planet. The art centre is great! It’s built in this old abandoned factory that has been completely renovated into this incredible art space and hostel. The centre that hosts so many amazing shows, performances, bands and events is a piece of art itself!

4. Friends are in Budapest for a weekend - what must they absolutely see and do?
Everyone MUST go to the thermal baths and ruin pubs. I would probably also take my friend to see a performance at Bakelit, its got such all cool atmosphere. All three of those things are absolutely incredible you certainly can not see anything like that in Australia.

5. What is your favourite Hungarian food?
Túro Rudi I know its not really a meal but I do have a bit of sweet tooth. So trying some of the local chocolate was really great.

6. What is never missing from your refrigerator?
An Australian spread for toast called Vegimite. In Australia everyone grows up with it. It is an acquired taste that divides most Australians. It is salty and it tastes like yeast. I have been unable to find any outside of Australia who likes it yet.

7. What is your favourite Hungarian word?
It’s a tie between köszönöm and egészségére. I have been saying both of these words quite a lot. Köszönöm sounds so nice and friendly. Egészségére is a bit of a mouth full and quite fun to try and say correctly after you have had few beers.

8. What do you miss the most from home?
I miss Australian music; there is something special about it. I have trouble explaining exactly what it is.

9. What career other than yours would you love to pursue?
If I were talented enough I would love to be a musician. I need a lot more practise for that though!

10. What's a job you would definitely never want?
I think any job where I am not able to use my wit and intelligence to solve problems would be quite dull.

11. Where did you spend your last vacation?
I went to Thailand for my twenty first birthday. It was an unforgettable week.

12. Where do you hope to spend your next one?
South America, Asia. Who knows its a big world!

13. What was your favourite band, film, or hobby as a teen?
The first band that I was ever obsessed with was an Australian band called Powderfinger. They were huge in Australia. They never really made it big anywhere else which is such a shame.

14. Apart of temptation what can't you resist?
While I am staying in Budapest I would have to say it would be the Soproni beer.

15. Red wine or white?
At home I usually only drink white. But since I have been in Budapest I have had quite a few nice reds.

16. Book or movie?
I prefer movies, but it really does depend. Its difficult to emulate the experience of reading a book. The amount of investment and enjoyment is quite different.

17. Morning person or night person?
At home I would say morning, but in Budapest definitely a night person. There is so much to do here at night. In Brisbane there is not a lot of entertainment options after 6pm that does not involve bars or clubs.

18. Which social issue do you feel most strongly about?
Inequality. Australia is a very wealth and egalitarian society but we still have so many deep issues. Internationally the divide between rich and poor is just as alarming. I think there is a lot more people can do for each other.

19. Buda side or Pest side?
I have spent most of my time in Pest and I like it!

20. What would you say is your personal motto?
Listen, learn, do.
