The jobs of some 3,700 employees in 229 companies linked to the bankrupt brokerages Buda-Cash and Hungária Értékpapír are in danger, corporate data provider Opten said in a report issued yesterday. The affected companies were also active in public procurement tenders and over the last three years secured Ft 2.5 billion in EU subsidies.

Ferenc Gyurcsány, prime minister during anti-government riots in 2006, said in a court testimony that the officers accused in connection with the riots were not guilty of the offences they had been charged with. Gyurcsány said he had phoned deputy policy chief Árpád Szabadfi on the night of Sept. 18, 2006, when the attack on the TV headquarters in Budapest took place.

The opposition Democratic Coalition said the next government would have to lift the classification of data concerning the Paks nuclear plant. It is unclear whether the 30 years applies from the completion of the project or on the date when the contract is fulfilled, so in practice it could mean “sixty to a hundred years” from now, deputy leader László Varju said.
