The National Assembly of Hungary voted on Monday to allow authorities to block websites that offer unauthorized livery services, reports Hungarian news site 444.hu. The law, which is scheduled to come into effect over the next month, was approved by MPs with a 119-61 vote, and three abstentions. The bill had been submitted ny Minister of National Development Miklós Seszták.

The Hungarian government is not looking to ban ride-hailing service Uber but simply wants to ensure that it competes fairly with taxi companies, a development ministry official said. The government does not oppose modern transport solutions, János Fónagy said after a meeting with representatives of Uber, the tax and transport authorities and the interior ministry.

Guest nights at private accommodations have gone up five-fold in Budapest since 2010 in tandem with the widespread use of popular home-sharing site Airbnb, according to Central Statistics Office figures published on tourism website turizmus.com. In the first six months of this year, the number of registrations by Budapest property owners surged from 1,500 to 7,000.

Tax officials will rent rooms and apartments as part of the investigation. The number of places available for rent in Budapest via airbnb has shot up from 1,500 last December to 7,000 today.
