Hungary’s ruling Fidesz party wants a multipronged solution to the problem of illegal migration rather than building reception centres, spokesman Bence Tuzson said. Temporary reception centres are needed but these must be closed once the wave of illegal migration wanes, he said, noting that the number of illegal migrants in the country recently surpassed 100,000.

The Roma woman who was barred from boarding a Toronto-bound plane in Vienna in the spring will receive €600 in compensation from Austrian Airlines, Népszabadság reports. The woman, a well-known figure in Roma public life in Hungary, asked that her name be withheld. She had planned to fly to Toronto on the Austrian Airlines flight to carry out a survey of Roma who have emigrated to Canada.

The government has prepared a list of safe countries of origin and safe third countries that includes the Western Balkans where most illegal immigrants arrive from. The list of countries deemed as safe under the asylum law includes all EU member states and four candidates for EU membership, namely Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia. The fifth candidate, Turkey, does not feature on the list.

The Government decided on the construction of two types of border fence at its Tuesday meeting; the Ministry of Interior and the Ministry of Defence will build an almost four-metre-tall fence on the sections of the border which can be easily penetrated, the Minister heading the Prime Minister’s Office informed the press at a press conference held during the break of the cabinet meeting.
