In Hungary a key element of celebrating Christmas is the traditional custom of the Bethlehem Shepherd’s play (betlehemes játék). The present-day version of the Bethlehem folk play originates from the 19th-20th century, although it may date back as far as the medieval times.

In many western churches it is annually held November 1. It is also known as All Hallows Tide, All-Hallomas, or All Hallows' Day.

Small boys learn this rhyme when they are still in the kindergarten, and they sing it to girls on Easter Monday, and then promptly 'sprinkle' them - without waiting for an answer to the poem:
"Through the greenwood going
I saw a blue violet growing
I saw it start to wither
Can I water this flower?"
