Government Spokesman András Giró-Szász criticised Sigmar Gabriel, leader of the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), for calling Fidesz an anti- European and populist party. The Fidesz-Christian Democrats will have a strong mandate in Brussels in the next cycle, the alliance’s list-leader Ildikó Gáll Pelcz said, after her party won Sunday’s European elections. Pelcz said the turnout in Hungary had been good in a regional comparison and considering that the general election had been held just a month ago.

There was nothing that would have prevented the authorities from holding both elections on May 25, but such an arrangement wasn’t deemed advantageous to the governing party.
