Archaeologists from the Janus Pannonius Museum in Pécs have started to dig out the mass graves in Mohács, where perhaps the most consequential battle of Eastern European history took place almost 500 years ago between Ottoman and Hungarian troops.

“Over the past 1100 years, Hungarians have experienced much more serious crises than the current one, but emerged victorious from every one of them”, Minister of Human Capacities Miklós Kásler emphasised at a ceremony in Budapest on Tuesday to present state awards to mark the 20 August national holiday, and awards postponed from the 15 March memorial day of the 1848 revolution.

The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess returns to the Met for the first time since 1990, in a new production directed by James Robinson in his company debut. America’s “folk opera,” as the 1935 creators described it, tells the story of disabled beggar Porgy, sung by Eric Owens, and his love for the drug-addicted Bess, portrayed by Angel Blue.
