The Franz Liszt Music Academy of Budapest has received the Europa Nostra Award in the conservation of cultural heritage category. The two-year renovation of the building was completed in fall 2013. We carry an interview with András Batta, rector of the Academy between 2004 and 2013, who was the unflagging powerhouse of that ambitious project.

Anti-corruption protests took place across Hungary today. In Budapest the demonstration started in front of the Eiffel Palace Office Building near the Nyugati (western) train station. A few minutes before the scheduled start of the protest it seemed as though police and members of the press would outnumber the protesters.

According to Jobbik MP Tamás “Roy” Sneider, extremist hate group Betyársereg (Highwayman army) needs fighters, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s mother is a Gypsy, and it is better to employ a Muslim as a personal secretary than a Jew. Jobbik must “project calm” and “must not appear violent” but at the same time “must divert Hungarian society in a direction which enables it to ‘radicalize itself”.

Swiss Central Bank Move Sends Hungarian Forint Tumbling

The forint sank to new all-time lows against the euro and the Swiss franc yesterday after Switzerland’s central bank stunned markets by scrapping the ceiling on its currency, in place since 2011. The Swiss franc surged to 0.85 per euro from 1.20, a 40% gain, before stabilising at parity with the euro.
