Beach Season Starts For Hippos In Budapest

May marks the start of the beach season for the hippopotamuses: Tücsök and Jusztina can use the outdoor swimming pool again. Although the inside one is at their disposal too, in the nice weather they prefer the outdoor pool, which opened in 1932.
Rain Couldn’t Stop Budapest Gourmet Festival

Some hadn’t noticed that this year’s Gourmet Festival’s official food was the chicken paprikash and the ćevap. As always, as soon as the Gourmet Festival had started, it’d started to rain. The opening was difficult with the constant raining but in the second day, the gourmands were more prepared: the Wellington boots had appeared as well as the rain coats and the wine glasses, too.

Museum of Applied Arts: Ödön Lechner (1845–1914), one of the greatest figures in Hungarian architecture, and certainly its most original, deserves a prominent place among the international talents from the turn of the century. According to tradition, the Lechner family, who had their own coat of arms, had migrated to Hungary from Bavaria.

At a press conference in Strasbourg following a European Parliament (EP) debate on Tuesday, Prime Minister Viktor Orbán said that every value can and must be open to debate. The EP debate centred on two issues: the Hungarian government’s standpoints on migration and the death penalty. A number of speakers accused the Hungarian prime minister of opposing basic European values.

Due to the strong Austrian influence of the Austro-Hungarian era, this dish of German origin is very popular in Hungary, known as bécsi szelet (Viennese slice), borjú bécsi (Viennese veal) or rántott hús (breaded meat). It is served in restaurants, and is a common meal in Hungarian homes, prepared often on Sundays or for festivities with spätzle, French fries, mashed potatoes, or rice.
