Retail sales in Hungary increased by an annual 4.6 percent in August, up from 4.2 percent in July, preliminary data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Wednesday show. Adjusted for calendar year effects, retail sales also rose by an annual 4.6 percent.

Hungary’s July trade surplus was revised downwards to 303 million euros in a second reading of data released by the Central Statistical Office (KSH) on Monday. In the first reading, published on September 8, KSH had put the July surplus at 322 million euros. Imports rose an annual 11.3 percent to 7.282 billion euros.

The government should state its reasons for aiding the construction of an oncology centre in Vietnam with 60 million euros, opposition Jobbik said on Friday. The contract to aid the 500-bed centre had been signed by the Socialist government in 2009, Andrea Varga-Damm of Jobbik told a press briefing. In the time since, Vietnam has doubled its GDP while Hungary’s has declined, she noted.
