All Fidesz and Christian Democrat MPs signed the form to nominate Fidesz MEP János Áder to the post of head of state, which was officially submitted yesterday. The lone exception was Regional Development Minister Sándor Fazekas, who is abroad. Other nominations are possible by 8 a.m. Friday, but none are expected. Parliament will elect the new president at 10 a.m. on May 2.

The conservative Batthyány Circle of Professors said in a statement that Hungary needs a president who has public esteem both at home and abroad. “Semmelweis University drew the appropriate conclusions on the matter for its part. We trust that the president will do the same”.

"The government will make the 98% tax on severance pay above a certain sum retroactive to 2005, under a proposal put forward yesterday by caucus leader János Lázár. The Constitutional Court struck down the 98% tax last month, in part because it had retroactive effect to the beginning of 2010.

Yesterday, 6 October is officially the national day to be sad in Hungary. That's according to the central legislation that officially announced that the day be declared the “Day of National Mourning” since 2001. On this day in Budapest the national flag was lowered to half-mast accompanied by a military display of honours in front of the Parliament.
