Claims Questioning Safety of Budapest-Belgrade Railway Line Rejected by MAV CEO

Hegyi addressed in a Facebook post media reports about the TUV inspection, a mandatory German technical examination, ordered by Janos Lazar, the transport and construction minister, for the Hungarian section of the line following the Novi Sad tragedy.
"MAV and I have received many questions about this, so it is important to clarify the key facts," he said. First, he emphasised that the Hungarian section fully meets all regulatory requirements for freight operations.
Second, passenger services will only begin once 160km/h speeds are safely achievable, contingent on meeting all technical and ministerial standards, including the successful completion of the TUV review of the European Train Control System (ETCS). He added that live tests of the system at 160km/h are scheduled for this week.
Third, Hegyi noted the TUV inspection is independent of the MAV Group, and will assess the contractor, railway company, and infrastructure operator. "We have no access to interim results -- and rightly so. We can only confirm what our joint statement with the ministry of construction and transport stated today," he said.
The TUV inspection is not a legal prerequisite for launching services but an additional safety measure voluntarily undertaken by the owner, he said.
The ministry has tied the start of passenger services to the completion of this review, not a predetermined date. "Safety comes first, and the freight traffic operating smoothly since February 27 is no exception," Hegyi said.
