State media manager MTVA yesterday announced that 177 employees will be dismissed in the first half of 2015, citing economic rationalisation, cuts in payroll costs and a rationalisation of operations. Those affected will be 146 staff members in Budapest and 31 in Pécs and Szeged.

The main trigger behind the number has been that doctors “seized every opportunity” to help patients in need and conducted when possible two operations on the same day, it said.

Thanks to a 900 million forint (EUR 2.92m) investment in health care, lung transplantations can now be done in Hungary, the government spokesman said. Besides Austria, Hungary is the only country in the region where such operations can be done, Éva Kurucz said in the National Oncology Institute.
